How is listening the most important part of public speaking?
“We have two ears and one mouth, so we can listen twice as much as we speak.” – Epictetus
Listening is the most important skill one possesses. It is the foundation of all communication, including public speaking. If you are not a good listener, you can never be a good speaker.
Do you remember how you learned to speak your mother tongue? You learned by listening to your parents and other care takers. You paid attention to their words, their tone of voice, and their body language. Listening is the first step to speaking. Once you inculcate the habit of listening, you will gradually master the skill of speaking.
At Chatterbox, we teach our students to be active listeners in order to be confident speakers. Active listening is a skill that involves more than just hearing the words that someone is saying; it also involves paying attention to the speaker’s body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice.
We give our students opportunities to practise and provide them with constructive feedback. Practise and feedback are essential for developing any skill, including listening.
If you are interested in learning how to be a better listener, we encourage you to contact us. We would be happy to discuss our Listening Training Programmes with you.
